Village Flag Lowered

The village flag has today been lowered to mark the passing of Joyce Miller, of Old Village Street.

Joyce moved to Burghwallis in 1975 after her marriage to Harry. At the time she was a regional management training officer for Boots the chemists. Joyce was a keen member of the congregation at St Helen’s church where she was also a member of the flower arrangement team.

A naturally strong willed character honed during her years in training, Joyce had an innate ability to ‘get things done’ and a phenomenal ability to remember people’s names. There was no hiding place in Boots if Joyce was on the case.

Unfortunately Harry suffered a significant stroke and Joyce became his dedicated full time carer. Undaunted Joyce and Harry carried on as best they could, and continued to travel frequently to their beloved Jersey.

After Harry’s death Joyce was persuaded to extend her travel schedule to include Australia, NewZealand and Hong Kong as well as major cities of Europe including Russia always accompanied with a cherished framed photo of Harry.

Joyce’s strong will and character will be missed by her many friends throughout England but especially in Burghwallis and the congregation at St Helen’s.
