Those taking a stroll down Abbe’s Walk may have been mystified by the recent appearance of a stone monolith.
The new stone is the first phase in a project to mark the original position of the Plague Well that greeted visitors entering the village who were obliged to wash any coins they were carrying. This was a crude means of trying to prevent the spread of the Plague and possibly the origin of the term money laundering – no that was a joke – but thanks for your understanding.
The next phase is to fix a A3 sized “lectern” table that will explain this part of our history and relevance of the well to the village.
