A1 Wentbridge and Wentedge Bridge Repairs

The ongoing A1 repair saga is set to continue. There will be additional restrictions to the A1 in February and March 2025 whilst further repairs are completed

The roadworks to repair the viaduct at Wentbridge are further complicated by the need to also demolish and replace the central support of the Wentedge bridge over the A1.
The plans are understandably dynamic, a combination of discovering unforeseen deterioration that is extending the repair along with attempts to minimise disruption to road users.
Recently the plan was to close the A1 for a couple of days to allow the removal of the central Wentedge bridge support. This was going to create a massive diversion but luckily a rethink has reduced the severity of the project, which now incorporates overnight closures and diversions.
Already many local roads have direction restrictions or are closed in readiness for the overnight closures that are spread over days in February and March.

Advice from National Highways:-

From January 2025, we’ll replace the central pier at Wentedge Road Bridge.

We’ll also carry out other maintenance on the A1 in the area, reducing the need for future closures.

To do this work, we’ll need some additional overnight full closures on the A1.

Please note – we’ve cancelled the previously scheduled overnight A1 southbound closures for 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 January. We no longer need them.

In February, we’ll install temporary props under Wentedge Road Bridge. These will help us lift the bridge deck off the centre piers.
The resultant diversions will see unusual volumes of traffic potentially through Burghwallis.

Diversions

We will have clearly signed local diversion routes throughout the closures.

We urge you to use these routes and not rely on your satnavs.

This has been an extremely complex project. We apologise for the considerable disruption caused to motorists, residents, businesses and regional communities.
